In the spring of 2020, Engineered Garments embarked on its inaugural collaboration with K-Way®. When the brand designer and my surfing associate, Daiki, approached me to create textile artwork, I had not previously engaged in textile design. Nonetheless, I had maintained a longstanding interest in this medium and readily accepted the project. Daiki specifically requested a pattern composed of a collage of black and white photographs.
I developed the artwork utilizing various photographic motifs that I had captured for prior collage projects. These included images from surf sessions at Long Beach, urban scenes in Long Island City, and architectural elements of Hell's Kitchen. To enhance the aesthetic appeal, I overlaid a tartan plaid pattern in the Black Watch color scheme atop the collage. Daiki appeared to value this concept, as it aligns with one of Engineered Garments' preferred patterns.
