RECOLLECTIONS OF LIGHT, PRESENT SHADOWS.
During the conceptual dialogue for the Engineered Garments FW24 film, designer Daiki Suzuki drew inspiration from the stark, atmospheric shadows of the 1949 noir classic The Third Man.
For director Manabu “Gaku” Inada, this resonated with a personal milestone—his first black-and-white short film for the brand in 2013. The collection is a profound exploration of the 1980s, evoking a sense of "familiar nostalgia" while masterfully fusing traditional silhouettes with contemporary chaos.
The resulting film is an homage to the visual language of the 80s and early 90s, capturing the jittery transition from Post-Punk to New Wave. It weaves together the starkness of Film Noir, the dream-logic of Surrealism, and the stillness of Metaphysical painting, all while projecting a futuristic style that mirrors the digital frontiers of the Metaverse.
