Simplicity and Solitude:
The Origins of FW21 In the fall of 2020, Manabu Gaku Inada met with Daiki Suzuki at the Nepenthes office in Long Island City to define the soul of the Engineered Garments FW21 collection.

Their dialogue centered on Henry David Thoreau’s Walden, exploring how its philosophy of simplicity intertwines with the rugged heritage of American outdoor culture—from the archival strength of Filson and Woolrich to the classic visual language of Field & Stream.

Guided by Thoreau’s principles, Gaku shifted his artistic focus toward typography as the primary subject. These minimalist, letter-based designs invite the viewer to transcend the literal and expand their imagination through the stark, evocative power of the word itself.

From Peak to Deep: A Typographic Journey
Conceptually, this typographic piece traces the descent of water through the natural world. Designed to look as if stamped directly onto the fabric, the artwork maintains a rugged, "printed" aesthetic that bridges the gap between artisanal printmaking and modern streetwear. By starting with a small 4x5 inch original, Gaku captured a density of detail that, when enlarged, highlights the beautiful imperfections of the ink—embodying the quiet, unadorned spirit of the FW21 collection.

The Hand-Carved Soul: Captured Imperfection
The original plate was hand-carved by Gaku himself into a soft rubber board, a medium that allows for intimate control over every line. To achieve a sense of organic transience, he repeatedly produced studies in diluted ink, embracing the resulting smudges and uneven textures. Because no two prints are ever identical, each piece resonates with a quiet, fleeting beauty—a reflection of the unpredictable yet harmonious rhythms of nature.

The Cycle of Adventure: Before Dawn After Dusk
"Before Dawn After Dusk" is a typographic tribute to the shared connection between Gaku and Daiki, rooted in their dawn-patrol surfing sessions and a mutual reverence for the outdoors. The wave icon nestled within "Before Dawn" and the forest silhouette in "After Dusk" bridge two distinct worlds—the ocean and the mountains. Together, they symbolize a seamless cycle of adventure and healing, capturing the quiet, transformative hours when the wild world is at its most potent.

The Silent Wanderer: A Symbol of the Wild
Leaning on a paddle at the forest’s edge, the solitary figure by the riverbank serves as the definitive icon of this collection. Although it emerged as a simple, late-stage print, the image possesses a profound narrative weight. This wanderer embodies the essence of Thoreau’s solitude, symbolizing the quiet strength and contemplative spirit that flow through the heart of the FW21 creative process.

The Chronology of Walden: A Conceptual Approach
Henry David Thoreau’s legendary residence at Walden Pond lasted exactly two years, two months, and two days—from July 4, 1845, to September 6, 1847. By isolating these symbolic digits from their historical context and printing only the count of days onto the garments, Gaku ventured into a conceptual art practice. This minimalist intervention transforms historical time into a cryptic, visual code, inviting the wearer to contemplate the weight of a life defined by intentional solitude.

The Archival Horizon: The FW21 Lookbook Cover
For the lookbook cover, Gaku meticulously reconstructed and laid out his entire series of typographic artworks into a single, cohesive vision. Designed to evoke the weathered, nostalgic charm of a vintage outdoor catalog, the cover serves as a gateway to the collection’s soul. By synthesizing various letterforms and icons into a layered graphic tapestry, Gaku reimagined the functional aesthetics of the past, creating a modern artifact that feels both timeless and deeply personal.

The Final Detail: A Special Edition Knit Hat
Gaku introduced a unique tag design for the knitted hats, inspired by the iconic wanderer’s motif. Featuring bold typography and the brand’s signature oars, the tag employs deboss printing to create a tactile impression, embodying the rugged spirit of "Made in USA" heritage. Each hat also includes a custom can badge, transforming it into a collectible piece from the FW21 collection.

The Blueprint of Nostalgia: The FW21 Archival Bandana
This discharge-printed bandana marks the origin of a series that became a staple in the Engineered Garments collections. Its complex layout—later repurposed for the FW21 lookbook cover—serves as a visual anthology of Gaku’s creative process, incorporating various unused logos originally designed for hoodies and tees. Crafted in the USA and released in traditional red and blue, this piece is more than an accessory; it is a vivid visualization of a deep-seated longing for the "good old days" of American outdoor
